Once you’ve decided to take action with Helm, you’ll meet with a qualified counsellor to have a planning session. They’ll utilise insights from assessments completed before and during this initial session to ensure they focus on what you need from Helm. They’ll help you identify the goals and desired outcomes from a Helm program and determine the number of sessions required to achieve those results.

Following your initial consultation, counselling sessions are likely to form an important part of your program. We’ll focus on building skills and knowledge to support the changes you want to make.

You have the option of booking one or multiple (3 or 6) sessions. Booking these sessions in advance gives you the opportunity to secure all sessions with the same counsellor, at a time that suits you.

Helm offers family and friends who may be concerned about their loved ones a session with a Helm counsellor. This can be to find out about how Helm can help and provide more information about what a Helm program might look like for your friend or family member. We can also work through strategies and ways friends and family can support their loved ones, along with options for further support for themselves beyond this single session.

This six-session program provides targeted help for alcohol and/or drug use.  You’ll learn about what triggers drinking or drug use, how substances affect the body and brain, and why change isn’t easy.  Your counsellor will work with you to identify the changes you want to make, whether that’s cutting down, reducing the impact or stopping altogether – it’s up to you.

The Power to Change is an online program that provides some simple strategies to help achieve your goals. You’ll book 6 x 40-minute sessions at a time that suits you, with one of our trained counsellors.  There are short online activities to complete between each session that will guide the discussion with your counsellor when you meet.

Sessions are available over the phone or online between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday.

Session price: this 6 session program costs $300.

Unfortunately, there are no Medicare rebates available.

To claim a Medicare or Private Health Insurance rebate for Helm services, you will require a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) or a referral from a GP or Specialist. You may already have an existing MHCP, which may be utilised. To claim a Medicare rebate, the counsellor you have selected will indicate if they accept Medicare payments. If they do not, you will not receive a rebate.

To access a rebate, please visit your GP to obtain a referral or MHCP. The MHCP should be addressed to Helm, 1/260 Hoddle Street, Abbotsford, 3067.

If you do not have a regular GP you an try Doctorai (www.doctorai.com.au). By downloading the Doctorai app on your Apple or Android phone, you can access a doctor in less than 30 minutes* and there’s a fee of $35 to access the service**. Once you’ve received your referral or plan, you can return and upload it via your profile on this website before your initial session.
